Roxanna Kooyman

Artist's Statement
Roxanna Kooyman was born in southeastern Iowa. As a girl, her grandfather taught her to carve toys and other objects. This led to a life time of wood carving and expression of artistic talents in various mediums.
In 1982 Roxanna began carving semi-professionally. On consignment for the U.S. Army, she made intricately carved walking sticks and duck decoys. Later she carved uniquely shaped Santas, birds, animals and human figures. Roxanna deeply enjoys carving free standing statues of the Savior Jesus Christ.
While many of her works are done in locally available native woods such as hickour and walnut, she also works in exotic woods suchas Koa, Mahogany. Austrailian Red Cedar, Queensland Maple.
In various locations across the United States, Roxanna has taught children, senior citizens, and adults to carve, draw, paint, and play musical instruments. Currently she teaches continuing education classes at Jacksonville State University.
